The art of marine navigation has evolved over centuries as sailors have ventured further offshore and the capabilities of vessels have improved. The Museum’s collection and displays present part of the story of the evolution of navigation techniques including pilotage, coastal and ocean navigation.

Read the stories of some of the early explorers of the Australian coast and the charts that they produced. See copies of the original charts produced by some of these navigators. Be amazed at the accuracy of charts drawn by an early navigator from an open boat. On a large wall map see the location of approximately 200 of the 1500 vessels that came to grief in the graveyard of ships along the Queensland coast.
