Decks of Shipside Grey
The Queensland Maritime Museum is pleased to support the "Decks of Shipside Grey" project.
In 1991 during the first Gulf War Jeff Dyson, father of HMAS Brisbane sailor Matt Dyson, wrote a poem entitled ‘Decks of Shipside Grey’ as a mark of respect to those RAN members serving in the conflict as well as commemorating the service of previous Naval personnel who had protected the shores of Australia. The poem was displayed in a prominent part of the Brisbane’s Operational Tour Book and then copyrighted a year later by the Australian War Memorial. Early 2004 saw the project progress when Jeff commissioned a local artist to sketch “The Steel Cat” from a photograph with the view of a print being produced for friends and close associates. It was only more recently though with the ‘Sinking of the Brisbane’ amongst other events that Jeff and Matt agreed this was an opportunity to truly honour the ship by having the piece professionally arranged and launched as limited edition art.
“Decks of Shipside Grey” is now available as a limited edition art piece of only 2005. The unframed 890mm x 460mm print is only $99.00 inclusive of postage and handling anywhere within Australia. All prints are individually numbered and signed by the author, Jeff Dyson, and at least $10.00 from each print sold will be donated to Legacy which we foresee and estimate will raise well over $20,000 in total.
