Exhibitions

Take a voyage of discovery through the exhibition galleries of the Queensland Maritime Museum and trace our maritime history from the days of the early navigators to the present day. Be amazed at the accuracy of charts drawn by an early navigator from an open boat. On a large wall map see the location of approximately 200 of the 1500 vessels that came to grief in the graveyard of ships along the Queensland coast. Discover how the first recorded shipwreck arose from the notorious mutiny on the Bounty. See how divers worked on the seabed before the invention of SCUBA gear.

Learn how a flame in a kerosene lamp can be seen by mariners many kilometres away. Admire the skill of craftsmen exhibited in models of ships from the days of the ancient Egyptians, through Mediaeval times to the Golden Age of sea travel when elegant liners plied the oceans of the world, not forgetting the mundane tasks performed by cargo ships and oil tankers.

See wooden sailing boats that brought pleasure to enthusiasts, young and old, and compare various types of marine engines fitted to power boats and small steamers.

View our maritime history in photographs and paintings. Read the story of the South Brisbane Dry Dock and the century of service it provided to ships of all types as well as to US submarines during the dark days of World War 2.

Continue your voyage by exploring the grounds, where you will see one of the smallest yachts ever to sail the oceans of the world, a lighthouse from the mouth of the Brisbane River, a Torres Strait pearling lugger, cannons from the time of the Battle of Trafalgar and other interesting displays.

Welcome aboard Diamantina (nominated as a Queensland Icon) - a Royal Australian Navy frigate built in Queensland and commissioned in 1945. Tour the ship from stem to stern and from bridge to engine room. See the cramped quarters in which the crew slept and ate their meals.

At our wharf inspect the powerful steam tug Forceful, which served the port of Brisbane for 45 years. When retired in 1970, she was the last coal fired tug working in the port.
