Pearling in the Torres Strait - The Norna Pearling Co

An extraordinary collection of photos of the Norna Pearling Co from approximately 1904 were recently donated to the Museum and 36 images from this collection are presented for public viewing for the first time in over 100 years. The Norna was an American schooner built in the 1879 and she enjoyed a very colourful history including visiting most parts of the world and crossing the Atlantic Ocean at least 50 times. The Norna was registered in Sydney in 1900. She was employed as the mothership supporting a small fleet of luggers. She was sold in about 1909 and was employed searching for wrecks until she was herself wrecked on Masthead Island in 1913. The exhibition features excellent images of Thursday Island luggers and associated activities.
