A voluntary organisation like the Queensland Maritime Museum and its collection can not exist without the involvement of the public and the support of interested businesses.
The Queensland Maritime Museum Association invites all to join our group of dedicated workers. No matter what your skills, we have a place for you at the Museum.
It is our aim to promote interest in and knowledge of maritime history, preserve historical artefacts and display them for the benefit of the public. This also includes the preservation of vessels such as the ex HMAS Diamantina, Australia's largest surviving World War 2 vessel, our famous steam tug Forceful, the lightship Carpentaria and the dock itself.
You can become involved with the Museum in a number of ways, including
- as a member of the Association
- as a volunteer for the Museum
- by making a donation or bequest
- by sponsorship of an item, display or activity
The Board of Directors thanks all for their generous support of the objectives of the Museum.

The Queensland Maritime Museum Association welcomes new members and appreciates the hard work of our existing members. Membership provides an opportunity to support the objectives of the Museum and the programs it runs. Our members participate in the day-to-day running of the Museum and the operation of Steam Tug Forceful. Regular newsletters and tri-annual member meetings provide the forum for keeping members informed of activity at the Museum. Member social gatherings are organised, usually at the Museum. The Museum is a not-for-profit organization and relies on the invaluable contribution of members and volunteers.
Our Members provide a special support group that includes individuals, families, businesses and community groups. They range from people previously involved in maritime occupations to those with an interest in maritime history.
Becoming a member brings with it substantial and numerous benefits:
If you are interested in joining the Queensland Maritime Museum, the Museum’s membership secretary can be contacted by emailing: membership@maritimemuseum.com.au.
A Membership Application or a Corporate Membership Application may be printed out, filled in and posted, together with membership payment, to the the Museum. (Note: Acrobat Reader required)
Or alternatively, you can check out our Online Membership Registration Form. It's a quick and easy way to become a member today!
The Museum’s volunteer program is an integral part of the life of the Museum. Our volunteers operate most areas of the Museum including reception, guiding, archives, library, maintenance, displays and the operation of Forceful.
We are a group of men and women, giving our time and skills, and in return we have the satisfaction of providing a worthwhile community service. As well, we have the companionship of persons of similar interests. Most members and volunteers are retired and find a need to remain active and appreciated. Our younger members have an opportunity to learn skills of benefit to their future, and are a valued group.
The commitment is for one day per month, but many volunteers find projects or join a group, giving 2 or more days a week. There are no pressures on anyone to do anything other than which interests them.
Persons interested in assisting as a volunteer at the Museum are invited to contact the Operations Supervisor (phone 07 3844 5361, facsimile 07 3846 1924 or by emailing: ops@maritimemuseum.com.au) to discuss your skill and our needs. Or print out and complete the Volunteer Application and post or fax it to the Museum.
Membership of the Association is NOT a prerequisite to being a volunteer. In fact, many of our band of volunteers are not members.
Most of our volunteers are directed to us by Volunteering Queensland, so if you need more information about volunteering in general, have a look at their website.
The Queensland Maritime Museum is a self-funded voluntary organisation, registered with the Australian Government under the Cultural Gifts Program and with the Australian Tax Office as a Tax Deductible Gift Recipient. The Queensland Maritime Museum appreciates the offers of donation and sponsorship which it receives from individuals and from companies. Without these donations there would not be a collection and the collection could not be maintained.

Sourcing of these items, by donation or at reduced, "mates rates" cost would be greatly appreciated by the Museum. Offers may be through your Company or through business connections you may have.
